Nagpur - Orange City of India


Nagpur is a winter capital and city of the Maharashtra state and largest city in central India. With a population of 4,653,171 (2011), Nagpur is the 13th largest urban conglomeration in India. Nagpur is famous throughout the country as an "Orange City" for being a major trade center of oranges that are cultivated in the region.  The main languages spoken here are Marathi and Hindi. The weather of Nagpur is not humid at all. The Nagpur seasons are mainly divided into summer, rainy and winter season. As Nagpur City is a cosmopolitan city, people of various religious beliefs reside in harmony in this place. The various religious communities of Nagpur are Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Christians and Parsis.
Nagpur lies precisely at the center of the country with the Zero Mile Marker indicating the geographical center of India. The city was founded by the Gonds but later became part of the Maratha Empire under the Bhonsles.
The Nagpur city has a well-built infrastructure. The Nagpur infrastructure will be further enhanced with the establishment of two Information Technology parks in the city. It is well linked by all the major means of transport i.e. airways, roadways and railways. The transport communication of the city of Nagpur makes it easily accessible from the rest of the country. In October 2005, the Nagpur airport became an international airport and was renamed as “Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport”. As Nagpur Airport operates not only domestic but also international flights, thus, it becomes one of the renowned airport and busiest airport of India.
The Nagpur’s Railway station links up the city with almost all places of India as it’s a popular railway junction situated on the railway lines of the south-eastern and the central parts of India. Apart from main railway station, Nagpur is surrounded by sub- stations like Itwari, Kalamna, Ajani, Khapri, Kamptee, etc.
Furthermore, the roadways also contribute greatly towards the Nagpur’s popularity. Nagpur possesses two major highways known as Howra-Dhule (Highway No.6) and Kanyakumari-Varanasi (Highway No.7). The Integrated Road Development Project of Nagpur is an endeavor of the Government to strengthen the infrastructure in Nagpur. Moreover, the Inland Container Depot at Nagpur is another program that enhances the infrastructure of Nagpur.
India’s first Multi-modal International Cargo Hub, which is also known as MIHAN is possessed by Nagpur. MIHAN works for the economically backward Vidarbha area around Nagpur. Innumerable Multi-national companies are expected to set up their base in Nagpur which will be another impetus to the infrastructure of Nagpur.
